The Shefa School is a Jewish community day school in Manhattan serving students in grades K-8 who benefit from a specialized educational environment in order to develop their strengths while addressing their learning challenges. We specifically serve students with language-based learning disabilities who have not yet reached their potential levels of success in traditional classroom settings. Shefa is a pluralistic community school, serving families across the range of Jewish involvement and observance. The Shefa School is seeking a Physical Education Teacher for immediate hire for the Lower School and Middle School. This is a five-day-per-week position, with the option to work a four-day schedule at prorated compensation.
● Collaborate with the PE team in teaching physical education classes to students in both the lower and middle schools
● Develop lessons and activities to teach organized cooperative games
● Develop lessons for skill development to participate successfully in hobby and leisure sports
● Deliver instruction using a direct instructional approach for all tasks and routines
● Follow student behavioral protocols such as Responsive Classroom and the LS and MS Behavioral Intervention plans
● Manage classroom routines and behavior
● Build relationships with students
● Represent physical education program at school wide events and celebrations such as yearly Curriculum Night and weekly Oneg
● Communicate regularly with families
● Collaborate with other faculty
● Oversee recess and special athletic activities, such as Field Day
The ideal candidate will have experience working in a school setting and coaching or teaching athletics to students. Experience with health education and/or working with students with language-based learning disabilities are a plus. Candidates should demonstrate flexibility and comfort with risk-taking and ambiguity.
